Registration with the Neurosurgery Match Program is required
in order for an application to be considered. Residents accepted
into our Program for a first year position in Neurosurgery will
be accepted into the PGY-1 (NS-0) position in the MUSC General
Surgery training program unless other arrangements are made in
advance. Alternative arrangements must include 3 months training
in an ACGME approved neurology residency program and receive
prior approval from the American Board of Neurological Surgery
and Dr. Patel.
After receipt and review of the requested information, a personal
interview may be requested and will be arranged at a mutually
convenient time. In order to assure the maximum opportunity to
meet all the faculty, interviews are normally scheduled on Thursdays.
The application form should be filled out and returned with a
photograph, curriculum vitae, personal statement and a copy
of
the neurosurgery match program registration. At least three letters
of recommendation should be requested. Please specify to individuals
from whom you are requesting a reference that the letter must
be sent directly to the Department of Neurosurgery at MUSC and
received no later than OCTOBER 1. (Letters of recommendation
in addition to the required three may come in after the deadline.)
Official undergraduate and medical school transcripts and Dean's
letter must be received by the final deadline November 17
in order for the application to be considered complete. Medical
schools usually send the official transcript with the Dean's
letter
after November 1 of each year. It would be helpful in determining
who to ask for an interview, if copies of both undergraduate
and
preliminary graduate transcripts were already received by the
October 1 deadline for applications (includes application form,
photograph, curriculum vitae, personal statement and match registration
verification form).
Information regarding stipends may be obtained by contacting
the House staff Office, MUSC, 171 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, South

also provided for residents to periodically attend post-graduate
courses or workshops (e.g. neuroradiology, neuro-ophthalmology,
