The MUSC training
program in neurology is fully approved by the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education for training and Board Certification
in Neurology. We maintain inpatient services in adult neurology at the
Medical University Hospital and at the nearby Department of Veterans
Affairs Medical Center (DVAMC).
The residency program prepares the resident to become a qualified specialist
in the practice of clinical neurology and/or a clinical neuroscientist
and teacher in the academic setting. MUSC Neurology residency is a four-year
program, which includes an integrated PGY1 year of medicine. The PGY1
year includes two months of neurology and allows for a smooth transition
from internship to upper levels. Four PGY-1 positions are made available
each year.
Successful applicants to the Residency Program are automatically assigned
a PGY1 medicine position, and no additional application/interview is
required for this first year. Please see Internal Medicine Dept Overview
for more information on specifics of the Medicine Internship year at
http://www.medicine.musc.edu.
In-patient Neurology Service
MUSC Neurology Department has two active in-patient services, Medical
University Hospital (MUH) and Charleston DVAMC, located 3 blocks from
MUH.
The MUH adult inpatient service consists of two PGY 1 and one PGY 2
residents who direct patient care and are supervised by a PGY3 or 4 and
an attending Neurologist. The service also consists of 2-4 3rd year medical
students and 4th year externs.
The Charleston VA in-patient team consists of 1-2 residents along with
several medical students. Team responsibilities include evaluation of
patients in Emergency Care Dept., referrals from Neurology specialty
clinics as well as referrals from outside physicians. MUH patients are
admitted to a dedicated Neurology/Neurosurgery wing, which also includes
an active Epilepsy video monitoring unit. The services work directly
with Physical/Occupational/Speech therapy and Social Work, who are assigned
specifically to the Neuro/Neurosurgery subspecialties.

Neurology Consultation Service
Both Medical University Hospital and the Charleston VA have active Consultation
Services. MUH service consists of a PGY2 along with PGY1 Psychiatry
interns, Internal medicine PGY2 or PGY3 and medical students. Both
services offer the residents an opportunity to integrate the foundation
of medicine built in their PGY1 year with associated neurological manifestations.
The Consult Teams also staff the VA General Neurology clinic two mornings/week,
which maintains the continuity of inpatient to outpatient care.
Pediatric Neurology Service
MUSC Children’s Hospital also maintains an active Pediatric in-patient
consultation and outpatient clinic, which consists a of PGY2 Neurology
resident and medical students, and is available as an elective to Pediatrics
residents. Residents have a varied exposure--from the Neonatal and Pediatric
Intensive Care Units to the Epilepsy monitoring unit. Residents also
have the opportunity to attend the Pediatric Brain Tumor Clinic, which
is run by the Neurosurgery Department as well as a monthly Pediatrics
clinic at the Saleeby Center in Hartsville, SC.
Continuity Clinics
In addition to the in-patient, pediatrics and consultation services,
each resident assesses and manages a group of patients in his own longitudinal
neurology clinic. The Resident General Neurology Clinic begins in the
PGY2 year and continues to the end of PGY4. The resident’s clinics
are located at MUSC Ambulatory Care, McClennan-Banks Clinic and at
the VA. Patients who are seen by a resident during an in-patient stay,
an Emergency Dept. evaluation, or are referred to the General Neuro
clinic from other MUSC Ambulatory clinics have the opportunity for
follow-up with that resident. This provides residents with hands-on
training in the evolution of neurological disease and the development
of patient-physician rapport.
