Project 1 - Mapping Brain Circuitry of Heroin-Seeking Behavior
One of the most debilitating aspects of addiction is the tendency for users to relapse to drug use, even after extended periods of abstinence. This project aims to identify areas of the brain are important for renewed drug-seeking in an animal model of relapse to heroin-seeking behavior, and further to examine how these areas link together to form circuits that drive heroin-seeking behavior. Our ultimate goal is to identify potential therapies for the treatment of addiction based on an understanding of the neurochemistry that contributes to compulsive drug seeking following exposure to drugs of abuse.
